Academic Writing — How to Create Good Texts
Trainer: GOLINWISSENSCHAFTSMANAGEMENT
Participants: max. 12
Attendance fee: tba
Target Group: The course is intended for doctoral students at a more advanced stage.
The methods and instruments of scientific writing can be learnt. With a few select mechanisms for structuring and techniques for building arguments, it becomes possible to articulate even complex data clearly and comprehensibly. Coherently built up and convincingly formulated, even academic texts can be an exciting read! In this workshop the process of academic writing is highlighted from the first idea through the structuring and formation of the text to its completion. The participants engage with the content related, formal and organizational aspects of writing and train their text competency with exercises.

Networking in the Academic Context
Trainer: GOLIN WISSENSCHAFTSMANAGEMENT
Participants: max. 12
Attendance fee: tba
Target Group: The course is primarily intended for doctoral students at the beginning of their PhD.
In the academic sector, as elsewhere, personal contacts offer chances. They help to gain co-operation partners and supporters for one’s own project, receive conference invitations, be involved in publications, and be told about interesting positions. The numerous digital interaction formats allow for a simple way of cultivating your network and staying in touch –especially now, under the contact restrictions due to the Corona virus pandemic. Networking requires initiative and continued investment. It is helpful, in this context, to be able to rely on proven traditional and digital strategies to make the right contacts, to maintain them on a long-term basis and to find the balance between giving and taking.
Data Visualization – Rick Scavetta

Participants: max. 12
Attendance fee: 265,00 EUR
Target Group: The course is intended for doctoral students at a more advanced stage.
The Data Visualisation workshop enables life scientists to effectively create figures based on quantitative data that add impact to their publications. The workshop is divided into two one-day modules: Principles and Applications.
This is not a statistics course but the course will focus on using R. To benefit from the workshop, you should have a clear question in mind what to tackle using R. Participants should already be proficient with R.

Science Graphics – Thomas Fester

Trainer: Thomas Fester (Scivit)
Participants: max. 6
Attendance fee: 67,00 EUR
The course is intended for doctoral students at all stages interested in science graphics (diagrams, data presentation) with an additional focus on scientific illustrations. The production of such illustrations using vector graphics will be an important part of the workshop’s hands-on section. Furthermore, there will be a short look at 3D-modelling and animation.
Career Orientation – Ruth Willmott

Trainer: Sascha Vogel (Science Birds)
Participants: max. 10
Attendance fee: 130,00 EUR
Target Group: Candidates in all years of doctorate training.
Whether it’s a seminar at university, a working group meeting or a presentation at an international conference – the visual presentation of science accompanies us through all phases of life and career stages. This makes it even more important to be able to use this form of communication.
In our presentation training courses, participants learn everything they need to know for a successful presentation. From the question of which type of presentation suits, which occasion, to the selection of the slide design – we keep the requirements and goals of scientists in mind and address the needs of the participants.
Objectives:
Visualization of data
Working with templates
Working with PowerPoint, Keynote, etc.
Design of appealing and understandable slides
Designing presentations, posters and handouts – differences and similarities
Getting Funded – Ruth Willmott

Data Analysis with R – Rick Scavetta

Start: May 10, 2021
Group session: May 17 – May 18, 2021
Session 1:1: May 20 – May 21, 2021
Trainer: Rick Scavetta (Scavetta Academy)
Participants: max. 12
Attendance fee: 400,00 €
Target Group: For doctoral students already with some data.
The Data Analysis workshop enables laboratory-based life scientists to use the R statistical programming environment to analyze their own data. R is an open-source cross-platform software tool that combines data manipulation, statistical modelling and visualization. This workshop will focus on data manipulation and biostatistics modelling using relevant examples from the life sciences. Using plenty of hands-on exercises, participants will learn about different data structures and functions in R, how to manage and ask specific questions of their data, and use the results of statistical tests. Programming capabilities that make R well-suited to data manipulation will also be introduced.
